In addition, the increased production of a protein called keratin, which helps prevent water evaporation in the skins outer layer, causes skin to thicken. This expands pores and can make the skins surface rough and uneven.

Acne is formed when too much sebum combines with dead skin and creates a blockage, called a comedo. The two kinds of comedos are commonly known as blackheads and whiteheads. Another type of acne occurs when bacteria, sebum, skin cells, and white blood cells surround a blocked pore, causing it to become inflamed.

Acne usually affects the face, upper neck, chest, shoulders, and back, as these areas contain more sebaceous glands. It can also cause scarring when new skin forms unevenly over damaged skin.
