This layer of skin is made up of dead cells fused together to protect the living cells beneath them. Normally, cells in the strateum cornium are filled with water and expanded to their full size. When they lose moisture they shrink and ultimately crack, becoming visible as flaky skin.

For mature skin, dryness becomes an issue as fewer moisture-sealing substances such as fatty acids, ceramides, and lipids are produced to keep water from escaping. Decreased hormone levels in the body, in addition to long term UV exposure, harsh climate exposure, and poor skincare habits may all account for the depletion of these liquids. The natural, constant loss of moisture in the strateum cornium is intolerable for mature skin, and it quickly becomes dry and loses its flexibility. Decreasing levels of collagen and elastin, and the natural loss of fat in the deeper layer of skin are also responsible for the increase of fine lines and wrinkles.
